HOHENFELZ, Germany - Responsibility for all individual Soldier barracks at U.S. Garrison Hohenfels will soon shift from unit security officers to security officers in a transition that will make a big difference in the lives of individual Soldiers and their first sergeants.

As part of the First Sergeants Barracks initiative, a team from the Public Works Department's Housing Division will soon be responsible for all administrative responsibilities at Hohenfels Barracks, relieving first sergeants of the heavy workload associated with running them while improving Soldiers. will give relief quality of life

Under the new system, barracks would be managed similarly to post quarters: housing would be in charge of checking tenants in and out, preparing rooms for new tenants, overseeing furniture, repairs and other duties.
Perry Clark, Hohenfels FSBI manager and retired command sergeant major, said putting responsibility for day-to-day operations at the barracks would give first sergeants more time to focus on other priorities.
"Unit leaders will still be in the barracks to maintain health and welfare, and it takes away their administrative responsibilities so they can do what they need to do, which is their war," Clark said. focused on the mission at the time,” Clark said. .
The program was established to achieve the equally important goal of improving the quality of life by standardizing living conditions for the individual soldier. Previously, each unit had its own standard operating procedure for its barracks; Now there is only one SOP for the entire fort.

"It's a holistic approach to standardizing the standard of living and improving existing living conditions to meet that standard for individual Soldier housing," Clark said.
At Hohenfels, there are now five full-time employees to ensure that the barracks meet the advanced living needs that individual soldiers deserve.
When a soldier leaves his barracks room, a housing officer inspects it before turning in his key, noting any damage. Soldiers are responsible for any damage to the room. A cleaning and maintenance worker will check the room, if necessary, he will make repairs, paint the walls and update the furniture.
While the Hohenfels FSBI team works to meet all room standards, they are busy raising the bar for temporary housing.

When a new soldier arrives at Hohenfels, whether day or night or weekend, he is placed in a transit room, a room run by the FSBI that is held to the same standards as the permanent barracks rooms. goes Instead of having units find a place to sleep for their new soldier, a soldier they didn't know was coming, Clark and his team put him in a comfortable room with pillows, linens, blankets and toiletries provided by community services. kept
Rooms also have a lockable wall locker to keep valuables safe. The next morning, the soldier would leave his transit room and sign for the keys to his new barracks quarters.
During the time the soldier is in the barracks, housing and DPW will be responsible for any maintenance, but it will still be up to the soldier to report any necessary work orders.
Currently, these procedures only apply to buildings that are already occupied by housing. As of today, 16 of the total 34 individual Soldiers at USAG Hohenfels are on post, and the plan is to complete the rest of the transition by Christmas.

One of the latest barracks to transition from unit to FSBI control is the 527th Military Police Company.
Cpl. Crystal Sowells, a 527th supply technician, said she couldn't be happier with the new arrangement.
"It was great, especially on the supply side. It took a lot of weight off my shoulders," said Sowells, who is involved in running the barracks in addition to all of his unit-related duties.
"Now it's so convenient, (the rooms) are really nice. Some of the soldiers who live elsewhere tell us they used to live here," Sowells said.

Staff Sergeant FSBI officer-in-charge Jeremy Parks said the FSBI team goes to great lengths to work with the unit's needs.
"The program works as long as there is good cooperation between the units and the houses, and so far it's going very well. Everyone is working well together," Parks said.
"This is a great approach to better housing for individual soldiers and they certainly deserve it," said Clark.Pvt.
